    Ammons was childhood friends with another boogie woogie master-to-be, Meade ‘Lux’ Lewis. They grew up together in the early s on the South Side of Chicago. For a while, they both lived in the same apartment building as Clarence 'Pine Top' Smith, one of the most influential of the first generation of boogie woogie pianists.
