Apr 12,  · Susumu Yokota is my favourite artist. I can think of nobody who crafts such delicate and beautiful sounds from such a wide array of sources. Yokota first attracted attention outside his native Japan in with the album Frankfurt-Tokyo Connection on Harthouse. It is a fairly straightforward selection of banging trance that was popular as rave faded and before jungle took.

Kaleidoscope could at times pass for the soundtrack to some early '90s anime movie as cropped from an old VHS, but this being a Susumu Yokota album there's also plenty of beautiful, virtuosic sonic manipulation afoot, as on the sublimely warm and tactile '2 Skys' and the watery synth-play of 'Wave Drops'.

Susumu Yokota has always been odder, though. Even when his non-dance LPs have been at their most accessable, there's still been an awkwardness and off-kilteredness which didn't neccessarily work in his or the listener's favour. Here, mostly it does. There's some very good ideas floating around here/5(2).
